On the occasion of Latvia’s Centenary the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia to the Hellenic Republic presents an exhibition of photography “From Folk Dress to Clothing - A contemporary view on the traditional Latvian folk dress” at the Image Gallery.
The exhibition “From Folk Dress to Clothing” provides visitors with an impression of the rich cultural heritage of Latvia through the amazing photos by Latvian photographer Jurģis Rikveilis. The photo collection represents connection and proudness of Latvians with their origins. It visualizes the rich history of Latvian wardrobe, which is a significant part of Europe’s cultural heritage and forms the basis of many creative and manufactured interpretations.
The exhibition shows a selection of 30 high quality photos consisting of two photo series. 12 works are from the photo series “Calendar” and give more attention to the details of the women and men folk dresses, the other 18 pictures are from the photo series “The life of the folk dress” demonstrating the lushness and boldness of the Latvian folk dress as it is worn in present days during important national events such as the “National Song and Dance Festival” which has become an event of national and international importance and takes place every four years.
2018 is a special year for Latvia — one hundred years have passed since Latvia has proclaimed its independence. The Centenary programme spans almost five years, from May 2017 to January 2021, to tell the story of Latvia. In framework of the worldwide Latvia’s 100 years celebration the exhibition “From Folk Dress to Clothing” after Athens will travel as well to Thessaloniki, Aegina Island and Cyprus.
